Hi, I’m Max,
Your friendly Australian history nerd and travel companion…
Since my earliest days, books have held a special place in my heart. It was, however, an encounter over two decades ago with ‘The Sunne in Splendour’ by the late Sharon Kay Penman, that changed my life. This incredible tale of Richard III transformed my casual affection for reading into an all-consuming passion for history.
Like a snowball rolling down a hill, my thirst for knowledge grew with every page I devoured. I absorbed information like a sponge, developing a particular fascination with the captivating world of the Plantagenet era. It wasn’t just the monarchs, queens, and enigmatic figures that intrigued me; it was the entire tapestry of the Middle Ages - the troubadours, epic battles and knights clad in shining armour.
Australia boasts a rich history, stretching back thousands of years, but our indigenous people were nomadic, leaving behind few tangible structures. It was when I embarked on a journey to Europe, wandering through majestic medieval castles, haunting ruins, and awe-inspiring cathedrals and abbeys with centuries of stories etched into their stones, that my excitement became indescribable.
In 2017, after experiencing a deluxe-themed tour of Scotland, I searched fervently for a similar adventure focused on the Plantagenets in France. To my dismay, such a tour could not be found. It was then that the spark of an idea ignited within me - an idea to create my very own tour company.
The prospect of not only bringing my dream to life but also sharing my passion, and kindling the same curiosity in others is an exhilarating feeling. When you add my love of travel, and my genuine fascination with diverse cultures and people to the mix, it culminated in what I now proudly call Plantagenet Discoveries.
