Rouen Cathedral Light Show

The final resting place of royalty, a stunning example of historic gothic architecture and a façade made famous by the artist Claude Monet, make a visit here an absolute must

The first church is believed to have been located under or close to the current site from around 260 when Christianity was first established in Rouen by Saint Mellonius. Parts of the current cathedral’s structure you see here today, however, date back to 1030.

The cathedral has seen many prestigious occasions over the centuries, including the baptism of the very first Duke of Normandy Rollo in 915.  William the Conqueror is also believed to have been present at the new cathedral’s consecration in October 1063. A favourite attraction of the church is the Chapelle de la Vierge or “Lady Chapel” where lie the tombs of French Monarchs, Norman Dukes, and religious leaders. Some of the more interesting include Rollo, Duke of Normandy, the Empress Matilda and the embalmed heart of Richard the Lionheart.

From mid-June to September you can be dazzled by the breathtaking light show that illuminates the church with a magnificent display of colour, accompanied by music pertaining to the theme of the year. Standing watching this light show extravaganza will make you feel like you are stepping back in time, becoming a part of this spectacular visual storytelling of the tale of Normandy.

Rouen in general has played a huge part in the Plantagenet story, this makes it a very important stop on our Plantagenets in France tour departing in September every year.
